Layout of proposed new engine (drawn by Benedict Pfender)

Group project for the 4th year Advanced module in Aircraft Engine Technology at University.

The aim of the project was to design a new jet engine to either improve an existing plane's current duty cycle, or to develop a completely new duty for it. We chose to design a set of new engines for the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airframe to increase its range and/or payload in humanitarian missions.

My main responsibilities in the project involved the design of the engine's turbine stages, and the evaluation of the engine's thermodynamic cycles for on and off-design conditions.

A two-engine extremely high bypass ratio configuration has been proposed to replace the current 4-engine Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 Turbofan configuration. The proposed configuration is lighter, and also has a higher propulsive efficiency, thus decreasing the specific fuel consumption.
