Reverse engineering a Bosch handtool

Second year individual design project at University.

Conceptual design of a new type of handtool for the gardening or DIY market, using and adapting existing Bosch hand tools as part of 2nd year Mechanical Engineering. Desk and field research was conducted (online and through questionnaires regarding what people find difficult or a chore to do around the house and what is currently available on the market. This led to an idea for designing and modelling a BBQ grill cleaner with interchangeable heads for cleaning other materials/appliances. The design tutor and Bosch representatives were very impressed with the modelling as well as the idea and design analysis of the tool.

The project taught me a lot about the process of designing a new product; it included an analysis of the aesthetics, ergonomics and costing of the hand tool, calculations for gear ratios, motor torque and battery selection, as well as a detailed consideration of design for manufacture and process selection.
